A Great Cause - Half the Sky

I love great causes.

I support the movement HALF THE SKY (2012) as it is a truly heroic cause.  An amazing, enlightening, empowering, heart-wrenching film: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, a multi-part documentary series based on the best-selling book by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.

description from PBS.org:
"Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide was filmed in 10 countries and follows Kristof, WuDunn, and celebrity activists America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union, and Olivia Wilde on a journey to tell the stories of inspiring, courageous individuals. Across the globe oppression is being confronted, and real meaningful solutions are being fashioned through health care, education, and economic empowerment for women and girls. The linked problems of sex trafficking and forced prostitution, gender-based violence, and maternal mortality — which needlessly claim one woman every 90 seconds — present to us the single most vital opportunity of our time: the opportunity to make a change. All over the world women are seizing this opportunity."

I cried for the pain and the tears of these women and girls. I thank my lucky stars I live in a place where violence against women and girls is not allowed, it's not something that is culturally accepted.  I am so grateful to live in America and have things people in third world countries only dream of... clean running water, electricity, toilets. The pain and agony that the women face daily are unspeakable. Girls being sold to brothels by their own parents.. women beaten and forced to leave their homes by their husbands.. babies killed if born to a women who is not circumcised.. girls as young as 8 mutilated as they are circumcised by tradition.

Half the Sky an eye-opening experience that is making it's way around the globe to raise awareness so we can each try to do something, even just one thing, to help. From one mother to another.

I truly recommend everyone see this documentary. It is available on Netflix and PBS.org
Be forewarned, it contains mature subject matter.
